CASTLE HILL EVENT SPACE & LINEAR PATH
Castle Hill Events Space
The Scheduled Monument of Castle Hill is associated with the ancient seat of O’Neill’s, the Flight of the Earls and the Plantation of Ulster. The event space is a successfully transformed former Ministry of Defence facility with the addition of a protective awning and viewing tower. The design has been kept simple but attractive; materials and finishes have been selected to reflect the utilitarian aesthetic of the building. This complex project was delivered to an extremely tight timescale to meet European funding conditions. This building has been recognised by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, receiving The Award for Excellence in Architectural Technology 2016.
Linear Path
The linear path comprises of 7 kilometres of footpaths and cycle ways, creating a network of safe paths from the hill, along public roads, through existing woodland and parkland, delivering a long-term aspiration for a footpath ‘around the town’. The route has been designed to be safe and inclusive for users of all ages and abilities, with lighting and signage which is clear but unobtrusive. The paths are extremely well used and have opened up safe, off-road routes integrating neighbourhoods and encouraging many locals to take up walking and cycling.
