FACULTY OF ARTS, ULSTER UNIVERSITY

Our brief involved the relocation of three schools within the Faculty of Arts – the School of English & History, School of Modern Languages and the School of Media, Film & Journalism.

The new Faculty of Arts building has been designed with a clear hierarchy of circulation to maximise legibility for building users. East-West spine corridors at each level are bisected by a three storey North-South central atrium overlooked by academic, research and teaching rooms, which offers flexible space for a variety of Faculty events and encourages informal social & academic interaction.

Areas of Western Red Cedar cladding, which has been used extensively on new and refurbished buildings elsewhere on the campus, relieve the monolithic rendered finishes.  Key challenges included resolving the detailed design for the complex North and South facades and achieving the necessary acoustic standards within the specialist TV and Sound Studio spaces. The building has been designed to BREEAM 'Excellent' standard.
