The site is a key stop-off attraction on the Causeway coastal driving route. There are two platforms: the north-east platform offers extensive vistas to the east over Dunluce Castle and beyond; the north-west platform has views that look west, over Portrush’s iconic “white rocks”, Royal Portrush Golf Club’s Dunluce and Valley links, Ramore peninsula and Donegal in the background. Viewing the rising and setting sun from the platforms has become a popular pastime and the aurora borealis has been captured.
Our new design has:
• Increased parking available at the site, including for coaches,
• Enhanced facilities for cycling, walking, trader space and accessible parking.
• Restored the original topography, creating a translucent and more natural viewing are, allowing for short walks to provide increased access to the views at the cliff face. The railings are anti-climb, strong and collectively form a safe basket for viewers to experience more advantageous viewing locations. The platforms protrude out and offer a dramatic experience and appreciation of the coastal eco-system.
• Created an amenity area between the car park and the cliff edge which provides opportunity for informal relaxation, picnics, leisure and informal enjoyment.
• Enhanced biodiversity by the creation of hydro-seeded planted mounds with local indigenous seeds.
• Provided a consistent, attractive suite of street furniture. Created from Cumaru Hardwood which is a coastal tolerant timber that is homogeneous, reflecting the site’s natural setting and facilitating the intended leisure, recreational activities and informal meetings. Crushed raw white limestone was used to form pathways that reflect the stunning backdrop of the former quarry along Dunluce Road.
