This project included the design, project management and delivery of a fully accessible play area, including a new changing places facility to be installed within an existing adjacent pavilion building.
The proposals revitalised an under used site comprising of two former tennis courts along with a small outdated play facility. The design focused highly on how the users of the site would engage and interact within the park.
Accessible gradients, ramped accesses, braille on signage, inclusive seating to play equipment, inclusive picnic tables, autism friendly colour schemes all help to bring children together in play. Tree and shrub planting has been used to integrate it with the natural environment, bring structure to the layout and provide user friendly play zones. Selective sensory planting creates a pleasant environment providing a range of textures and smells. A sensory trail from the upper to the lower sections includes a bespoke willow tunnel archway offering a light and shade sensory experience to partially sighted users. A ‘Cozy Cocoon’ was included in order to provide a safe refuge for the sensitive needs of certain users, such as those with autism.
Other specific play equipment includes a wheelchair swing, inclusive roundabout, a dual axis simulator for accessible use, a giant revolving disc, team swing and a large scale fully accessible multi-play unit with slide, ramped access, sensory panels and much more.
