The Carlton Vale Boulevard project aspires to transform Carlton Vale into an ecologically diverse, tree-lined avenue with re-imagined public spaces and improved transportation links. This important new green infrastructure project is known as Carlton Vale Boulevard, The project is located in South Kilburn, London, and is part of the South Kilburn Regeneration Programme.

This project was led and funded by Brent Council through various funding mechanisms. GM Design Associates Limited were appointed to lead the design works and multi-disciplinary design team of consultants, to ensure a high-quality scheme was delivered meeting all key aims & deliverables.

The key aims/deliverables of the project were as follows:

• To reverse the hierarchy of vehicle dominance, to encourage sustainable transport options, including walking and cycling and public transport.
• To increase the pedestrian areas and public realm to create opportunities for new external social and community event spaces.
• To provide two cycle lanes, separated from the road by SUDS & Ornamental planting strips.
• To improve air quality on Carlton Vale – mitigating pollution outside schools, residential areas & community facilities through safeguarding of existing trees and creation a new tree-lined avenue that will help to will enhance the biodiversity of the area with a variety of species, which will provide bio-resilience, seasonal colour and interest.
• Incorporate SUDS & Rain Garden system, which will attenuate surface water
• Creation of a low maintenance, vibrant and robust bio-diverse planting palette to provide habitat opportunities for birds, bees and wildlife planted with climate resistant species and phyto-senser (pollution reducing) planting – including biodiverse bus stop roofs.
• To de-clutter the public realm, existing site furniture removed and replaced with new high quality, multi-purpose and robust street furniture to create an inclusive and accessible streetscape.
• New Lighting columns will be introduced to improve the visibility, safety and night-time economy of Carlton Vale, increase passive observation and reduce antisocial behavior.
• Improved junctions and crossings, with raised tables to reduce vehicle speeds.
• Extensive local community engagement on the project through the project website, consultation events, design workshops, exhibitions, as well as organized walking tours – led by GMDA.
